Diabetes is a lifelong medical condition that affects people’s day-to-day wellbeing. Learning to control the condition is essential to avoid long-term health problems such as heart disease, blindness, and amputations.
Diabetes UK Midlands and East in partnership with NHS Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care System (ICS) are hosting an online event for people who live with diabetes or are affected by the condition. This is part of a series of Diabetes UK events across the region in November for Diabetes Awareness Month and World Diabetes Day.
The free Zoom session on 3rd November (9.30am-12pm) offers expert information from local healthcare professionals on day-to-day management, diet, foot care and mental health. There will also be an opportunity for participants to have their say on the future of their diabetes services and what changes they would like to see. Click here to register.
Clare Hambling, GP Clinical Lead for Diabetes at NHS Norfolk and Waveney, said “Diabetes is a serious medical condition that affects thousands of people in Norfolk and Waveney. We want to support people living with diabetes, and those that care for them, to understand what they can do to manage their condition and reduce the risk of developing diabetes-related health complications.
“Living with diabetes can be associated with psychological distress and mental health concerns. That’s why we are so pleased to be working with Diabetes UK to deliver this online event that will provide practical advice and support from local experts to help people take control of their diabetes and improve their health.”
Brioni Maker, Healthcare Systems Engagement Lead (Eastern region) at Diabetes UK said: “We know living with diabetes can be hard, so this event aims to help people think about how they manage their condition and what support they need.
Hearing from health experts and other people with diabetes may offer a fresh insight into different aspects of care. Everyone’s journey is different. We know the last few years have been really challenging for so many people and we want to make sure people have access to good care, education, and support to help them live well with diabetes.”
The workshop is open to anyone in Norfolk and Waveney living with diabetes, or people who care for others with the condition.
Around 68,000 people in Norfolk and Waveney are registered as living with diabetes, and over 90% have type 2, according to the latest data.
