Speech and Language Therapists

Speech and Language Therapists work with people of all ages who have problems with speech, from childhood lisps to older patients following a stroke.

You will need a three- or four-year degree through an accredited university course or a two-year postgraduate course for graduates in an appropriate discipline and then to register with the Health and Care Professions Council. Apprenticeships may be available in your area.

You need to have excellent language, communication and listening skills and good hearing.  You will need to be patient, calm and tactful in dealing with patients who may be embarrassed by their condition.

You can find more information via the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT.org) and the Health and Care Professions Council (hcpc-uk.org).
