Menopause

The challenges associated with living through the menopause are being increasingly considered an important aspect of wellbeing at work.

Many staff experiencing the menopause are in work and we want to raise awareness of menopause and specifically how we can help our colleagues who are in this natural phase of their life, who may need support at work due to the impact upon their physical, mental and cognitive functioning.

Symptoms can include changes to periods, hot flushes, night sweats, difficulty sleeping, reduced sex drive, vaginal dryness, headaches, low mood, palpitations, joint stiffness, reduced muscle mass and recurrent urinary tract infections.

A start point is to create a culture in which menopause can be talked about openly and without embarrassment. By putting in place the necessary support this will not only have a number of positive impacts to the individual but this will also benefit your organisation including; increase in employee retention, increase in employee performance, lower sickness and absence and reduction in recruitment costs.

Below are a host of resources which can help to support both manager and employee:

Health and Wellbeing Passports

The idea of a health & wellbeing passport is to enable staff to have open and honest conversations with their line manager. It allows individuals to easily record information about their health, any reasonable adjustments they may have in place and any difficulties they face.

The Health & Welbeing Passport includes sections such as:

  • Things to know about the employees health condition
  • Things to help them to do their role
  • Triggers and Challenges
  • Any Additional Information

Essentially, the passport enables employees to explain to their line manager about their health and anything they could have in place in the workplace which enables them to carry out their role. For example, this could be:

– ways of communicating at work

–  specific equipment

– modifications to their desk

– any appointments they regularly need to attend to stay well at work.

These adjustments may be those staff need all the time, or changes they may have in place to accommodate fluctuations in your health.
